Hymenoplasty, also referred to as hymen repair surgery, involves stitching the torn edges of the hymen using dissolvable sutures.
Brazilian influencer Ravena Hanniely, 23, plans to undergo a hymenoplasty, a surgical procedure aimed at reconstructing the hymen, at an estimated cost of $19,000 (₹16 lakh). Hanniely revealed that the decision holds deep personal significance, symbolising a fresh chapter in her life.

What is hymenoplasty?

Hymenoplasty, also referred to as hymen repair surgery, involves stitching the torn edges of the hymen using dissolvable sutures. The procedure is often chosen for personal or cultural reasons. Hanniely described her decision as a way to restore her self-esteem and achieve a personal milestone.

“I want to become a virgin again,” she stated. “This is for my self-esteem and for personal reasons that have always been important to me.” She added that the surgery offers psychological benefits, emphasising that it’s about a woman’s feelings and autonomy over her choices.

Hymenoplasty Risks

Medical experts warn that hymenoplasty carries risks, including infection, scarring, minor bleeding, and irregular healing. Additionally, doctors highlight the symbolic nature of the surgery, noting that it cannot physically restore virginity.

A doctor explained, “It’s a cosmetic surgery, but it’s more symbolic and raises significant ethical questions. Patients should make informed choices without societal pressures influencing their decisions.” Informed consent is critical due to the cultural and psychological dimensions associated with the procedure.

Despite criticism and societal pressures, Hanniely remains resolute in her choice. She urged for greater understanding and acceptance of such personal decisions.

“Unfortunately, not everyone can understand or support such intimate choices. We need to stop judging and start respecting these decisions,” she said.
