This IIM wants to use AI to set question papers and check answers, even students can use it for projects
IIM-Nagpur is set to revolutionize student assessments with Artificial Intelligence. AI will drastically cut down grading time from weeks to just a day or two. Professors will still have the final say, ensuring accuracy and depth. This move aim...

IIM-Nagpur director Bhimaraya Metri told the Times of India that the institute is actively exploring AI tools to speed up assessments, set question papers, and streamline academic processes. Currently, manual checking takes nearly two weeks, but with AI stepping in, the initial evaluation could be completed within 24 to 48 hours.
However, Metri made it clear—AI won’t replace professors. Instead, it will act as a powerful assistant. “AI cannot replace humans, but it cannot be ignored either,” he said, adding that human examiners will still review answer sheets after AI completes its initial scan to ensure nothing important is missed.
The institute plans to shift exams and submissions online so AI tools can analyse responses more effectively. These systems will scan answer codes, detect key points, and assign marks based on accuracy and depth. But the final word will still lie with human evaluators, especially in cases where answers go beyond standard patterns or show exceptional thinking.
Behind the scenes, IIM-Nagpur is holding internal meetings and considering licences for specialised AI platforms. A final decision on rollout is expected soon.
The AI push won’t stop at grading. Students and faculty may soon get direct access to advanced AI tools for academic work and research. But there’s a catch—blind copy-pasting won’t be tolerated. Faculty members will also use AI-powered detection tools to ensure originality and prevent misuse.
In fact, knowing how to use AI smartly could soon become a skill students are graded on. Metri emphasised that asking the right prompts and using AI creatively may be part of future evaluation criteria.
The move signals a major shift in management education, where AI won’t just be a tool—but a skill every future business leader is expected to master.
