Andhra-based breed Viatina-19 is the most expensive cow in the world
A cow of the Ongole breed, originally from Andhra Pradesh, has set a record in Brazil by selling for $4.82 million (approximately Rs 41 crore) at an auction. The sale, which took place in Minas Gerais, makes it the most expensive cow in the world. Despite its declining recognition in India, the breed continues to attract significant attention internationally due to its superior genetics and physical traits, a TOI report stated.

Viatina-19 fetches record price

The cow, named Viatina-19, has consistently commanded high prices in auctions. In 2023, it was sold for $4.3 million at an auction in Arandu, Brazil. Last year, it fetched nearly $4.8 million. This year’s sale surpassed previous records, highlighting the breed’s value in global cattle markets.

Unique traits make Ongole cattle desirable

Ongole cattle, native to Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh, are known for their strength, heat resistance, and muscular structure. These qualities make them highly sought after for dairy and breeding. Brazil has invested in the breed’s development, leading to improved genetic quality and higher market value. Viatina-19, weighing 1,101 kg, exhibits these enhancements with a strong build, a prominent hump, and skin adapted to extreme temperatures.

Ongole breed in Guinness World Records

Viatina-19 has not only set auction records but also earned global recognition. The cow won the "Miss South America" title at the Cow Champion of the World pageant. In 2023, it was officially listed in the Guinness World Records as the most expensive cow ever sold.

Lack of recognition in India

Despite its success abroad, the Ongole breed has not received similar attention in India. Farmers in Brazil and other countries have capitalized on its potential, while Indian farmers face challenges due to the lack of structured breeding programs, government support, and a growing preference for crossbred cows.

"The Ongole breed is earning huge revenues in Brazil and other countries. Unfortunately, we are unable to utilize its potential. With proper conservation efforts and genetic improvement programs, India could reclaim the lost glory of its indigenous cattle breeds," said Manne Anjaneyulu, a cattle breeder from Kankipadu.
