Jal Mahal in Jaipur has five floors, but four remain underwater. Know the history, architecture and fascinating facts about Rajasthan’s Water Palace.
Why are four floors of Jal Mahal underwater?
The most striking feature of Jal Mahal is the way it appears to emerge directly from the lake. Visitors viewing it from the shore can see the upper storey and its sandstone exterior, but the remaining four floors are submerged when the lake is filled to the required level. The palace was designed to exist within the lake rather than stand on its banks. Its construction and materials helped it withstand the surrounding water. Lime-based mortar was used in the structure, helping limit water seepage through the masonry. The submerged floors are what make Jal Mahal different from many other royal buildings in Rajasthan. From a distance, it can look like a single-storey pavilion floating on the water. The building's actual design, however, extends well below the visible surface.
What is the history of Jal Mahal?
Jal Mahal's story is closely connected to the history of Man Sagar Lake. The reservoir was developed to address water shortages in the region, where droughts had long posed challenges for local communities. A dam was constructed in the area in the late 16th century. Raja Man Singh I later expanded the reservoir, which became known as Man Sagar Lake. Can visitors enter Jal Mahal?
Jal Mahal is primarily viewed from the banks of Man Sagar Lake, and public access to the palace interior has generally been restricted. Visitors should check current local rules before planning any access beyond the designated viewing areas. For most tourists, the attraction lies in seeing the palace rise from the water and understanding how much of the building remains hidden beneath the surface. The Economic Times Business News App for the Latest News in Business, Sensex, Stock Market Updates & More.
