The Whale OTT Release: Here’s when and where you can watch Brendan Fraser's Oscar winning psychological drama

Brendan Fraser returned to the big screen late last year and won Best Actor at the Oscars 2023. This is his first Academy Award nomination. Darren Aronofsky directed the psychological drama 'The Whale' written by Samuel D. Hunter. The film is set to be released on digital platforms this week, allowing audiences to witness the actor's Academy Award-winning performance.

The Whale is an American psychological drama film that premiered in India on February 3, 2023. The plot of the film, which also stars Sadie Sink, Hong Chau, Ty Simpkins, and Samantha Morton in pivotal roles, focuses on an introverted, morbidly obese English teacher who seeks to reconnect with his emotionally distant teen daughter.

From March 16, 2023, the Oscar-winning film will be available exclusively on SonyLIV. The announcement was made on the OTT platform's social media platform. The official handle of SonyLIV made an official announcement and wrote, “Acclaimed with 2 incredible Oscar wins at the 95th Academy Awards. The Whale is a groundbreaking film that received two Academy Awards”.


Brendan Fraser became emotional during his acceptance speech while receiving his Best Actor award on the Oscars stage. He stated that this is how the multiverse appears. He also stated that he began this business 30 years ago and that things did not come easily to him, yet there was a facility that he didn't appreciate at the time till it stopped, referring to his lengthy absence from the big screen.

In the Darren Aronofsky-directed film, Fraser plays Charlie, a housebound 272 kg English teacher who virtually teaches students with his webcam blacked out. Although Fraser gained weight for the role, prosthetics makeup artist Adrien Morot was tasked with drastically altering the actor's appearance. Morot created the suit using advances in 3D printing technology. The application process was ultimately cut down to four hours.
