The Smashing Machine has finally made its way to OTT platforms in India, allowing a wider audience to watch one of Dwayne Johnson’s most intense and unconventional performances in recent years. After a limited theatrical run in late 2025 that earned critical appreciation but modest box-office returns, the film’s digital release offers viewers a second chance to engage with this hard-hitting sports drama.

The Smashing Machine Plot

The film chronicles the meteoric rise and personal downfall of legendary mixed martial artist Mark Kerr, a dominant figure during the formative years of modern MMA. Set between 1997 and 2000, the narrative moves through Kerr’s time in the UFC and Japan’s Pride Fighting Championships, capturing both his success inside the cage and the physical and emotional toll that came with it. Rather than smoothing over uncomfortable truths, the story confronts Kerr’s struggles head-on, particularly his dependence on painkillers and the relentless pressure of elite combat sports.

Directed by Benny Safdie, the film stands apart for its raw tone and emotional restraint. Johnson steps away from his familiar larger-than-life image, delivering a subdued and vulnerable portrayal that has drawn widespread praise. His physical transformation is striking, aided by prosthetics designed by acclaimed makeup artist Kazu Hiro, making him almost unrecognisable on screen.

Emily Blunt plays Dawn Staples, Kerr’s partner, and her performance adds emotional depth to the film. Their volatile relationship forms the emotional backbone of the story, showing how Kerr’s professional highs collide with his personal unraveling.

The fight sequences are grounded and realistic, featuring appearances by real fighters such as Oleksandr Usyk and Ryan Bader, who portrays MMA icon Mark Coleman. Despite earning only around USD 21 million globally against a reported USD 50 million budget, the film gained awards-season attention, including a Silver Lion win at the Venice Film Festival for Safdie’s direction.

Where to watch The Smashing Machine in India

The Smashing Machine is now streaming in India on Prime Video. The film became available on the platform on January 16, 2026, with the original English audio and multiple subtitle options, making it easily accessible for Indian audiences looking to catch up on the critically discussed drama.
