In today’s digital age, parenting has become more challenging as children engage with online spaces and smart devices at younger ages. Balancing safety with independence is a concern for many parents, and AI-powered home surveillance and digital nannies are emerging as helpful tools. Beyond cameras and monitors, these systems assist parents in decision-making and child safety. AI nannies offer convenience, personalization, and innovation, transforming caregiving while raising questions about child development and family culture.

AI-Powered Parenting Tools
Manish Mohta, Founder of Learning Spiral, told Times of India: "Superficially, AI surveillance seems like an intrusion of privacy—a computer or robot just passively following every movement. However, if designed properly, this technology is not really monitoring but is shaped to guide and protect children."

Modern AI tools can detect potential risks, alert parents to unusual behaviour, and even monitor environmental factors like air quality and room temperature. Examples include smart cameras that detect unsafe play or falls and send alerts to parents via gentle notifications.

The Rise of AI Nannies
The Covid-19 pandemic accelerated adoption of AI childcare tools, educational apps, and smart monitors. A 2025 report by the AI in Childcare and Parenting Market valued the global market at $4.7 billion in 2024 and projected it to grow to $35.2 billion by 2034, with a 22.4% annual growth rate.

AI nannies provide personalized advice, monitor safety, support adaptive learning, and offer parents real-time insights into children’s well-being. According to the report, “AI-powered virtual assistants provide parents with invaluable assistance and direction, providing them with professional counsel and knowledge on efficient parenting methods and child-rearing approaches.”

A 2020 IEEE survey found that 81% of Indian parents were comfortable using robot nannies for homework, and 76% trusted them with children under two, highlighting strong acceptance in Asia.

Benefits of AI Nannies
  • Personalized Engagement: AI helps coordinate schedules, plan activities, ensure safety, and monitor health.
  • Adaptive Learning: AI-driven educational apps adjust to each child’s learning pace and style.
  • Remote Monitoring & Safety: Wearables and devices allow parents to track activities in real time.
Challenges and Ethical Considerations
Despite advantages, risks remain:
  • Attachment & Social Development: Children may form pseudo-relationships with AI but cannot receive genuine human empathy or secure attachments.
  • Privacy & Security: Digitized monitoring increases data vulnerability.
  • Equity & Cost: Advanced AI may be expensive, widening digital divides.
Mohta emphasized: "The important aspect relates to the idea of intentionality and boundaries. Parenting with AI will not displace human judgment; it will expand it. Rather than documenting every moment, parents can pay attention to AI, which provides insights when it matters most."

He added: "Smart AI systems can respond to changes in a child’s mood or stress through tone of voice, body language, or facial expression—helping parents notice nuanced indicators of distress, such as anxiety, frustration, or loneliness."

Balancing Safety with Independence
Parental discretion is crucial. Mohta suggests: "Discussing with children what the AI tools are for—allowing children to see the sensors and cameras as safety measures instead of tracking devices—could help children feel informed and involved."

AI monitoring can act as a co-pilot in parenting, distinguishing between concerning behaviors and environmental observations. Mohta noted, "This allows us as parents to actively engage in the heart of parenting where nurturing, teaching, and connecting with our children occur."
