Using mobile phones in temple premises across Tamil Nadu is set to be banned. According to PTI, the Madras High Court has urged the state government to impose the restriction "to preserve the cleanliness and sanctity" of temples. The directive was issued to the State Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR&CE) Department by the HC panel of Justices R Mahadevan and J Sathya Narayana Prasad.
To reduce inconvenience, the court ordered that phone deposit lockers be installed at temples. Security professionals will also be deployed to guarantee that this directive is followed.
This hearing was held as part of a public interest lawsuit (PIL). Petitioner M Seetharaman requested that the authorities take appropriate steps to restrict the ownership and use of smartphones inside the premises of the Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple in Tiruchendur, Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu.
Seetharaman said that all devotees come with cell phones and take images or movies inside the temple's grounds without limitation. Seetharaman said that photographing idols is not only against the Agama Rules (which govern temple ceremonies), but also endanger the temple's and its assets' security.
