Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google, announced on Monday that during the nail-biting FIFA World Cup 2022 final, Google Search received the most traffic in its 25-year history. Argentina survived a few nervous moments to register a fighting 4-2 penalty shootout win over defending champions France on Sunday, fulfilling Lionel Messi's dream of winning the FIFA World Cup.

Pichai tweeted, "During the final of the #FIFAWorldCup, search recorded its highest ever traffic in 25 years; it was as if the entire world was searching about one thing". He previously stated that it was one of the greatest games ever played. "Well played Argentina and France. Jogo Bonito. Nobody deserves it more than #messi, the greatest player to ever play the game. What a swansong, "posted Pichai.

The World Cup Final also marked the fulfilment of Lionel Messi's dream of winning the prestigious trophy, which now places him among the greatest athletes in sporting history.

Argentina won the thrilling finale 4-2 on penalties after the Messi-led team led 2-0 in the first half until the 80th minute when a smashing Kylian Mbappe hat trick forced the game into penalties, where Argentina eventually crossed the line.

Sergey Brin and Larry Page founded Google Search in 1998. Lex Fridma, a host of the Lex Fridman Podcast and a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, responded to Pichai: "Over a billion people tuned in, united by their enthusiasm for the game. That is the best thing about football: it is a truly global game that brings us all together." "Google did deliver in terms of consistent real-time updates," said another Pichai supporter.
