That old mobile phone sitting forgotten in a drawer may be worth far more as a source of recovered metals than it appears. Space Daily has highlighted the growing interest in electronic waste as an urban source of valuable materials, while data from the United Nations and World Economic Forum show just how concentrated some precious metals can be in discarded electronics.

The striking comparison is that a tonne of e-waste can contain around 100 times more gold than a tonne of gold ore, according to a 2019 UN Environment Programme report. The comparison refers to e-waste as a broad category rather than one specific type of device.

Why old phones contain gold

Gold is not used in smartphones because manufacturers want to make them valuable to recycle. Its usefulness comes from its excellent conductivity and resistance to corrosion.

Small quantities can be found in electronic components and connectors, particularly on printed circuit boards. Phones can also contain other valuable materials, including silver, copper and palladium.

The amount in an individual handset is tiny. The real value becomes apparent when thousands or millions of discarded devices are collected and processed together.

A tonne of e-waste can be richer than gold ore

The phrase “urban mining” describes the recovery of valuable materials from discarded products rather than extracting them from natural deposits.

According to the UN Environment Programme and its partners, a tonne of e-waste can contain about 100 times more gold than a tonne of gold ore. The 2019 report also estimated that as much as 7% of the world's gold may be contained in e-waste.

The World Economic Forum similarly described discarded electronics as a potential “gold mine”, noting that recovering metals from e-waste could reduce the need for some new mining while creating economic opportunities.

How much gold is in a mobile phone?

There is an important distinction between gold concentration and the amount of gold in a single phone.

An individual mobile phone contains only a small quantity of gold. Older UNEP material cited estimates of roughly 340 grams of gold per tonne of mobile phones, alongside substantial quantities of silver, palladium and copper.

That does not mean one phone contains hundreds of grams of gold. The figure applies to a tonne of phones collected together. This is why recycling electronics at industrial scale is potentially worthwhile, while attempting to recover gold from a single household handset is not.

The world is producing mountains of e-waste

The scale of the opportunity becomes clearer when the volume of discarded electronics is considered.

The Global E-waste Monitor 2024, produced by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research and the International Telecommunication Union, reported that the world generated about 62 million tonnes of e-waste in 2022. Only around 22.3% was formally collected and recycled.

The report projected that global e-waste could reach approximately 82 million tonnes by 2030 if current trends continue.

This means the problem is not simply that valuable metals are sitting inside old phones. It is that the quantity of discarded electronic equipment is growing faster than the systems designed to collect and recycle it.

Why e-waste is difficult to recycle

Recovering gold from electronics is not as simple as opening a phone and removing a valuable component.

Electronic devices contain mixtures of metals, plastics, glass, ceramics and other materials. Recycling facilities must collect, sort, dismantle and process these products before valuable metals can be separated and refined.

Collection itself is another major challenge. A gold deposit is concentrated in one geographical location, whereas discarded phones and other electronics are scattered across millions of homes, businesses and waste streams.

This makes logistics an important part of the economics of urban mining.

E-waste recycling can also protect the environment

Recovering metals from discarded electronics has another potential benefit. When valuable materials are recycled, fewer virgin resources may need to be extracted from the Earth's crust.

The World Economic Forum has noted that harvesting materials from e-waste can generate substantially less carbon dioxide than extracting fresh minerals through conventional mining.

However, recycling must be carried out through appropriate facilities. Informal processing can expose workers and communities to hazardous substances, while unsafe burning or chemical treatment can contaminate air, soil and water. The UN has warned about the health and environmental risks associated with poorly managed e-waste.

Why you should not try to extract gold from an old phone

The presence of gold in electronics does not mean it is sensible or safe to recover the metal at home.

Industrial recovery involves specialised equipment and controlled processes. Some informal gold-recovery techniques can involve corrosive or toxic chemicals and create hazardous waste.

For consumers, the better option is to take unwanted phones, laptops and other electronics to an authorised e-waste collection or recycling facility rather than attempting DIY metal extraction.

Your old electronics are more than just rubbish

The idea of an urban mine changes the way we look at electronic waste. A broken smartphone may appear worthless, but thousands of similar devices can collectively contain significant quantities of valuable metals.

The UN and World Economic Forum figures demonstrate why electronic waste is increasingly viewed not only as a pollution problem but also as a resource-recovery opportunity.

That forgotten phone in a drawer is unlikely to make you rich. But multiplied across millions of households, those tiny amounts of gold, silver and copper represent a substantial resource, one that could be recovered instead of being lost to landfill or unsafe disposal.
