Thalapathy Vijay's wife Sangeeta Sornalingam reportedly seeking divorce after 25 years of marriage: Here's all about her and the reason

TVK chief and actor Vijay’s wife, Sangeeta Sornalingam, has reportedly filed a petition for divorce after more than 25 years of marriage.

The couple tied the knot in August 1999 and have two children — Jason Sanjay and Divya Saasha.

Why Is She Seeking Divorce?

According to reports citing the petition, Sangeeta has alleged that Vijay was involved in an extramarital relationship with an actress.


As per the divorce petition, Sankgeetha has accused Vijay of infidelity, alleging that he has had an "adulterous relationship" with an actress.

"In April 2021, the Petitioner (Sankgeetha) discovered that the Respondent (Vijay) was involved in an adulterous relationship with an actress. This caused her deep emotional pain and mental suffering, amounting to betrayal and violation of marital trust," the petition stated, adding that the actor "continued open association with the actress," which caused Sankgeetha emotional agony and embarrassment to the children.

"Since 2021, Vijay had emotionally withdrawn, treating his wife with verbal disdain and subjecting her to constructive desertion, forcing her to live separately within the matrimonial home. Vijay continued to travel abroad and attend public events, with the said actress," the petition further continued.

Sankgeetha also alleged that the actress regularly posted pictures of her outings with the actor on social media.

"The actress regularly posted photographs of these outings on social media. Vijay neither denied nor objected to the posts, thereby tacitly endorsing them," she added.



The legal proceedings are said to be initiated under provisions of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, which allow a spouse to seek divorce on grounds such as adultery and cruelty.

Who Is Sangeeta Sornalingam?

Sangeeta was a devoted fan of Vijay before eventually marrying him.

Their relationship began after Vijay’s career witnessed a breakthrough with the success of Poove Unakkaga in 1996. Sangeeta, who was based in the UK, travelled to Chennai to congratulate the actor on the film’s success. Her father is a Tamil industrialist from Sri Lanka who later settled in the UK.

Vijay was reportedly impressed by Sangeeta’s simplicity and personality. He introduced her to his parents, and what began as admiration gradually evolved into a marriage proposal initiated by Vijay’s family.

Vijay’s parents, S. A. Chandrasekhar and Shobha, travelled to London to meet Sangeeta’s family. After discussions, both families agreed to the alliance.

Thalapathy Vijay and Sangeeta Sornalingam were married on August 25, 1999. Despite their different religious backgrounds — Vijay being Christian and Sangeeta Hindu — the couple opted for a Hindu wedding ceremony, followed by a grand reception in Chennai.

The couple have two children. Their son, Jason Sanjay, appeared alongside his father in Vettaikaaran, while their daughter, Divya Saasha, featured with Vijay in Theri.

Notably, divorce rumours had also surfaced in 2024, but they were later dismissed as untrue.
