Tetsuya Yamagami: The man who shot Shinzo Abe

Tetsuya Yamagami was arrested on charges of attempted murder. Fuji Tv reported that he is an ex-maritime defence force personnel.

The arrested shooter of Shinzo Abe, Tetsuya Yamagami, is reportedly a forty-one-year old Japanese man from Nara prefecture.

The shooting happened around 11.30 in the morning (IST 8.30 am) when Abbe was making a speech during an election campaign.

Two witnesses, a reporter and an attendee, said they heard two gunshots. When the first was heard, nothing seemed to happen. But after the second, they saw that Abe had collapsed.


Abe's security rushed to his aid. Videos and pictures of the incident are floating across social media.

Witnesses said Yamagami did not try to escape after the shooting. He remained on the spot after laying the gun down.

Abe, who hailed from a political family, was Japan's longest consecutive serving PM. He had stepped down due to chronic illness in 2020.
