Tesla is set to unveil a more affordable version of its best-selling Model Y SUV today, as the electric vehicle maker seeks to boost sales and market share amid rising global competition. The company has not confirmed whether the new Model Y will be launched in India.

Tesla Cheaper Model Y India launch: What we know

Tesla has not provided details on an India launch for the affordable Model Y. Earlier launches in India have been limited, and no official confirmation has been made regarding pricing or availability in the country.

What to expect from the affordable Model Y

The upcoming Model Y will use Tesla’s existing manufacturing and design platforms. Over the weekend, Tesla posted two videos on X, teasing the launch. One shows headlights in the dark, while the other shows a spinning wheel with the text "10/7", indicating October 7 in U.S. date format.

There is no word on an in-person launch event, unlike previous major Tesla announcements. Key details such as price, driving range, and cost-cutting measures are still awaited. Musk had earlier indicated the car would be priced below $30,000 including U.S. EV tax credits.

Tesla Cheaper Model Y Sales and market context

In the United States, prices effectively rose by $7,500 after EV tax credits ended last month. That helped Tesla achieve record quarterly sales, but growth is expected to slow unless the affordable Model Y attracts buyers.

"The desire to buy the car is very high. (It's) just (that) people don't have enough money in the bank account to buy it," Musk said during Tesla's second-quarter earnings call in July. "So the more affordable we can make the car, the better."

Tesla Cheaper Model Y Production timeline and availability

Musk initially planned production by the end of June. Tesla said in July that only "first builds" were completed, with customer deliveries expected in the last three months of the year. The company is facing slowing sales of its older models, particularly in China and Europe.

Tesla plans to introduce more affordable vehicles, including a stripped-down Model 3 sedan, according to sources. Lower-cost models are expected to play a key role in Tesla’s goal to produce 20 million vehicles over the next decade, linked to Musk’s proposed $1 trillion pay package.
