Why some users won't be able to access Telegram?

Access to Telegram in India has been restricted for a limited period ending June 22, 2026.

This means many users may find that the app or platform is inaccessible during this period, depending on how the restriction is implemented across networks and service providers.

The restriction covers the period around the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination scheduled for June 21.

For users who rely on Telegram for daily communication, study groups, community channels or professional discussions, access disruptions may temporarily affect those activities.

Can Telegram users still edit old messages?

No.

A separate restriction remains in place until June 30, 2026, and it affects Telegram's message-editing feature for content that has already been posted.

In practical terms, users will not be able to go back and modify previously posted messages during this period.

The measure specifically targets edits to older content, including situations where files or attachments could otherwise be replaced after the original posting time.

Can users still send new messages?

Yes.

The message-editing restriction does not affect the normal sending of new messages.

Users can continue creating fresh messages rather than modifying older ones, provided they are able to access the platform.

The restriction is focused on editing existing content, not on ordinary message creation.

What happens to Telegram channels and groups?

For users who manage channels, study groups, community pages or discussion forums, the biggest change is the inability to alter older posts.

A channel administrator who normally updates an existing post with new information may instead need to publish a completely new message.

The restriction also affects situations where administrators would typically edit documents, PDFs or attachments that were already uploaded to a previous message.

Why was the editing feature targeted?

According to the details released, Telegram's editing capability had been used in some instances to create misleading "paper leak" claims after examinations.

The concern centred on the ability to edit older messages while retaining the original posting timestamp.

The temporary restriction is intended to prevent older posts from being modified and later presented as evidence that examination material had been shared before a test.

When will the Telegram restrictions end?

The platform-access restriction is scheduled to end on June 22, 2026.

The restriction on editing previously posted messages is scheduled to remain in place until June 30, 2026.

After those dates, the affected functions are expected to return unless further directions are issued.

NTA has welcomed the temporary measures, saying they will help support the conduct of the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination.
