Schools across Telangana may witness disruptions today as the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has called for a statewide school bandh to protest what it describes as the government's neglect of public education. The student organization has urged students, parents, and educational institutions to support the strike.

Why Is ABVP Protesting?

ABVP has raised multiple concerns related to school education in Telangana and has put forward a list of demands aimed at strengthening government schools and regulating the private education sector.

According to the student body, despite the presence of nearly 27,000 government schools and 23,000 private schools in the state, public education continues to face neglect. The organization has called on the government to take immediate steps to improve educational infrastructure and staffing.

Key Demands of ABVP

  • Introduce strict regulations on fees charged by private and corporate schools.
  • Take action against schools that impose annual fee hikes of up to 25%.
  • Fill vacant teaching and non-teaching positions in government schools through fresh recruitment drives.
  • Improve basic infrastructure in government schools and allocate adequate funds for their development.
  • Ensure the availability of essential facilities such as toilets, drinking water, and other basic amenities in all schools.
  • Implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 effectively across the state.
  • Appoint teachers and support staff on a permanent basis to address staff shortages.
  • Relieve government school teachers of non-academic responsibilities so they can focus on classroom teaching.
ABVP says the bandh is intended to draw attention to these issues and press the state government to take corrective measures to improve the quality of school education in Telangana.

So, Are Schools Shut Today?

According to media reports, several private and corporate schools in Hyderabad have declared a holiday today in anticipation of possible disruptions due to the ABVP-called school bandh. However, the Telangana government has not issued any official order announcing a statewide closure of schools.

Students and parents are therefore advised to check with their respective schools regarding holiday declarations, class schedules, and any other updates before heading to campus.
