Telangana man buys scooty by paying 12,300 coins of Rs 10 which he saved over three years, staff spends 2 hours counting them
A Telangana man’s decision to hold on to every Rs 10 coin he received as change eventually helped him pay Rs 1.23 lakh for a Honda Activa. B Ravi Joseph, 51, continued the practice despite family concerns over rumours about the coins’ future valid...

Joseph began collecting the coins on October 10, 2023, and continued despite concerns raised by family members over rumours that Rs 10 coins might be discontinued or lose their legal-tender status. When he took the accumulated savings to a dealership, staff members spent nearly two hours counting the coins before confirming the total.

How everyday change added up to Rs 1.23 lakh
Joseph said he saved money gradually from his routine spending, including grocery shopping and other daily expenses. Rather than setting aside large sums at once, he kept every Rs 10 coin he received as change.“For the past three years, out of my daily routine and grocery expenses, even when going out, wherever I went to the grocery shop, I managed to save some money little by little, saving approximately 1,23,000 rupees bit by bit,” he said.
Family concerns did not stop the savings
Joseph’s efforts continued despite reservations within his family. Rumours that Rs 10 coins could be discontinued or cease to be legal tender prompted some relatives to advise him against continuing with the collection.“My family asked me not to continue, but I did not give up. I kept saving the coins, one transaction at a time,” Joseph said.
After three years, the collection reached Rs 1.23 lakh, enough for the Honda Activa. Joseph had hoped to buy a Royal Enfield Bullet but said financial constraints prevented him from purchasing the motorcycle.

Showroom staff take nearly two hours to count coins
Joseph took the coins to Jagadamba Honda Motors in Luxettipet to complete the purchase. Dealership staff spent close to two hours counting the money before verifying the total value of Rs 1.23 lakh.He was accompanied by family members when he received the scooter. The unusual payment drew attention from showroom staff and local residents, as the pastor used three years’ worth of saved Rs 10 coins to pay for the vehicle.
His purchase demonstrated how consistently setting aside small amounts can build into a substantial sum over time.
