Telangana CM unveils 125ft tall B R Ambedkar statue in Hyderabad; Check key facts about the structure here

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao today unveiled a statue of the Father of Constitution - Dr B K Ambedkar - in the state capital. The recently-unveiled statue stands 125 feet tall.

The inauguration took place on the 132nd birth anniversary of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. Among the attendees present today included Ambedkar’s grandson Prakash Ambedkar as the sole chief guest, an official release noted. Moreover, Padma Bhushan awardee 93-year-old Ram Vanji Sutar was also present at the event.




Dr B R Ambedkar's 125-ft tall statue is placed next to the State Secretariat, in front of the Buddha statue beside the Telangana Martyrs memorial. It is now India's tallest statue of Dr B R Ambedkar.

As per reports, arrangements for up to 35,000 people were made to mark at least 300 people from each constituency. Moreover, for the general public, one lakh sweet packets, one-and-a-half lakh butter milk packets along with water bottles were also made available. To leave no stone unturned, up to 750 state-run RTC buses were also arranged.

The decision to construct the Ambedkar statue was made by Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and it took a minimum of two years to complete the necessary technical and manufacturing preparations. The sculptor of the statue is Ram Vanji Sutar, who is 98 years old and has been awarded the Padma Bhushan. He was also invited to the inauguration ceremony on April 14.

B R 'Babasaheb' Ambedkar

Babasaheb, the 'Father of Indian Constitution', fought against the caste system and socio-economic deprivation in India. Born on April 14, 1891, his last name was changed by his teacher from Ambavadekar to Ambedkar in school records.

While Dr Ambedkar remained a Hindu for most of his life, he converted to Buddhism in less than two months before he breathed last on December 6, 1956.
