Getting a resume shortlisted is an achievement in itself these days, especially when thousands apply for the same role. With recruiters spending just a few seconds scanning each application, a resume often becomes the most crucial factor in one’s career journey.

This makes crafting the ideal resume all the more important. But what exactly works?

A tech professional recently took to social media to claim that he received 30 interview calls after making a few crucial changes to his resume.

“Before I made these changes, I wasn’t getting many interview calls,” he wrote. “I made one major shift in how I listed my work experience.”

Instead of the conventional format, he used the following structure:

Work Experience (underlined)

Current Employer: Full company name (Pvt. Ltd), location (city)
Time Period: From 14 May 2025 to till date (specific dates)
Designation: Exact designation

Core Responsibilities (underlined)

  • List responsibilities in bullet points

  • Describe everything you did, using industry- and process-specific terms familiar to insiders

  • Explain clearly what you handled and the impact of your work, without bragging

  • If you have 20 bullet points, list all of them—the more, the better

He added that even if recruiters do not read everything, the detailed listing still creates an impression.

Additional tips

  • Read the job description carefully and align your work experience with it

  • Recruiters and HR professionals usually screen resumes first, based on requirements shared by the hiring manager

  • The closer your resume matches the job description, the better your chances

He cautioned against copying the job description word for word, as it may look fake—though he admitted doing it once and still landing both the interview and the job. “It helps with ATS rankings, but it’s risky,” he noted.

He also advised updating the work experience and skills sections for every job application.

Recommended resume format

  • Name

  • Email

  • Contact number

(Centre-align all three)

  • Horizontal rule

  • Career objective (optional, 2–3 lines)

  • Work experience

  • Education (latest first; coursework optional)

He advised candidates not to brag about achievements, suggesting that only relevant and important ones be listed. Good grades—especially 80 per cent and above—should be mentioned, along with the city of each school or institution.

For projects, he recommended sharing live project links rather than repositories and adding user numbers where applicable.

Under skills and languages, he suggested listing skills separated by commas, prioritising those mentioned in the job description. Subheads, he said, may confuse recruiters. Language proficiency levels should also be specified.

However, the techie urged others to take his advice “with a grain of salt”.

“It could just be a matter of timing and nothing to do with the resume changes,” he said. “It might have helped—or it might not have. Nobody knows, but it’s worth trying.”
