26-year-old Tarun Butolia was killed after a minor splash of Holi turned deadly in Delhi's Uttam Nagar on March 4. Tarun, who had gone to a Holi party, received a phone call that his parents were under attack. Alarmed and scared, Tarun rushed back home on his bike and was reportedly attacked by a mob. Even after he fell unconscious, the attackers allegedly kept hitting and stabbing him.

According to Tarun Butolia's sister, he studied Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) and was pursuing an online course in digital architecture and design. He created maps and house designs, imagining how houses should be rebuilt," Tarun's sister recalled, remembering him as a dreamer.

Tarun Butolia's social media profile showed he was a fitness freak and had sheer dedication towards combat sports. Over the past eight years, the 26-year-old worked hard, transformed his body, took pride in his progress and posted high-energy edits and reels on his Instagram. Videos showed him deadlifting nearly 100 kg and executing chest presses. His social media posts chart his transformation from a scrawny teenager into a well-built, muscular man.

His cousin Rahul told TOI, "Tarun had a lot to look forward to. He was just waiting to finish his course so he could start a career." Tarun Butolia was forced to discontinue his BCA in the second year due to the Covid pandemic, he took up a part-time job to save money. His uncle, Tek Chand said the disruption forced him to rethink his plans and he enrolled in a digital marketing course. "He wanted to start a business," Tek Chand told TOI.

Remembering Tarun from Uttam Nagar, his relatives said the young man had big dreams and an unwavering belief in his future. A family member, Vinod Kumar, recalled that Tarun had once spoken passionately about launching his own digital marketing venture within the next two years.

“The last thing I remember him telling me was ‘kuch bada karunga’ (I will do something big). He was full of life and spoke with confidence about his plans,” Kumar said, reflecting on Tarun’s ambitions and optimism.

Family members also described Tarun from Uttam Nagar as deeply spiritual. According to relatives, he frequently travelled to sacred destinations such as Kedarnath Temple, Rishikesh, Ayodhya and Varanasi, where he often spent quiet moments at the iconic Assi Ghat.

He was also a regular visitor to the famous Hanuman Temple Connaught Place in New Delhi, making it a point to offer prayers there every Tuesday. Relatives added that Tarun had been planning another spiritual trip to Uttarakhand in the coming weeks, a journey he was looking forward to with great enthusiasm.

Who killed Tarun in Uttam Nagar?

On March 4, the trouble began when an 11-year-old girl from Tarun's family, who was playing Holi on their terrace, accidentally threw a water balloon that landed on woman from a neighbourhood family, reportedly belonging to another community. Although Tarun’s family immediately apologised, the woman reportedly called her relatives, escalating tensions.

"They called my son and told him we were being beaten up. He came to save us, but they were waiting for him," Tarun's mother told TOI. Tarun, trained at the gym, tried to defend himself, but seven to eight men overpowered him. Even after he fell unconscious, the attackers allegedly kept hitting and stabbing him. Sunita described the horrifying scene, "We had locked ourselves inside the house because the mob just wouldn’t stop. They were beating our family members with rods, bats, and hockey sticks. My son had nothing to do with the fight. When he came back, he was on his bike at the end of the lane while we were all trapped inside. The attackers continued to hurl stones at the house and damaged the railings. Even when Tarun started bleeding and fell unconscious, they didn’t stop. They kept hitting and stabbing him. He only came to save us. Someone deliberately called him there knowing what would happen."

His father, Mamraj Butolia, added, "He used to go to the gym and lift weights. But seven or eight men attacked him together with rods, bats, bricks, and stones. It took several of them to bring him down. Even after he slipped and lost consciousness, they didn’t stop."
