Instead of taking dull silverware to a jeweller, you can try a simple home-cleaning method using aluminium foil, baking soda and salt, three common household items.
How To Clean Tarnished Silverware With Aluminium Foil
Start by lining a heatproof dish with aluminium foil, keeping the shiny side facing upward. Place the tarnished silver pieces inside, making sure they touch the foil but do not overlap or touch one another.Add baking soda and salt over the utensils, then carefully pour in boiling water until the silver pieces are completely submerged.
Allow the utensils to soak for around five to 10 minutes. Turn the pieces halfway through the process so that all sides come into contact with the foil. Heavily tarnished silverware may require the process to be repeated two or three times.
Once the tarnish has lifted, rinse the utensils thoroughly with clean water and dry them using a soft cloth to restore their shine.
When You Should Avoid This Silver Cleaning Hack
Although the aluminium foil, baking soda and salt method can work well on suitable silver items, it is not appropriate for every type of silverware or jewellery.Avoid using this technique on delicate pieces, especially those featuring gemstones, decorative elements or very thin layers. It should also be avoided on silver-plated items, as the chemical reaction and hot water could weaken or remove the plating and expose the underlying metal.
Avoid It On Jewellery With Gemstones Or Pearls
The method is also unsuitable for jewellery or silverware containing glued embellishments, gemstones or pearls. Heat and moisture can weaken adhesives, while porous stones may be damaged during the process.Antique silverware, heavily engraved pieces and items with intricate detailing should also be treated with caution. Repeated use of this method could potentially affect their fine patterns or decorative finish.
