Tamil Nadu weather updates: Rain with thunderstorms likely as IMD forecasts wet conditions across the state

Rain is likely in 17 districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, over the next three hours, according to the Chennai Meteorological Centre. The weather department has forecast thunderstorms and lightning in several districts during the period, with some areas also expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds.

In a post on its official X account, the weather department said the three-hour forecast is valid until 7 pm. Thunderstorms and lightning, along with rain, are likely in Chennai, Vellore, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, Salem, Erode, Namakkal, Cuddalore, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Krishnagiri, Karur, Villupuram and Tirupattur.

Heavy rain likely in several districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said heavy rain at isolated places is likely over the ghat areas of Coimbatore district, as well as the Nilgiris, Theni, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts. These areas may also experience thunderstorms and lightning, with gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph at one or two places.

Moderate rain forecast across several districts

Moderate rain at a few places, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, is likely over Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Tirupattur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts, along with Puducherry and the Karaikal area.

Light to moderate rain at a few places, with thunderstorms and lightning, is also likely over the remaining parts of Tamil Nadu.
