Tamil Nadu Weather today: Check rain and thunderstorm alert for Chennai and other districts here

Parts of Tamil Nadu may see rain and thunderstorms today as multiple atmospheric circulations influence the state’s weather. The weather centre has predicted light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning in the Western Ghats districts and southern Tamil Nadu on March 17. While some areas could receive brief showers, other districts may continue to experience hot and mostly dry conditions.

Tamil Nadu Weather Today

According to the weather department, several lower-level atmospheric circulations are currently active over the region.

One circulation lies over the southeast Arabian Sea and the adjoining Lakshadweep area. Another stretches from the southwest Bay of Bengal near the northern Sri Lankan coast up to the Kanyakumari sea region.

At the same time, a separate lower-level circulation is present over north coastal Tamil Nadu. These systems together are expected to trigger rain in isolated pockets of the state.

Tamil Nadu weather rain alert

Because of these conditions, districts along the Western Ghats and parts of southern Tamil Nadu may receive light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning today.

The rainfall activity is expected to persist over the coming days. On Wednesday, moderate rain is likely over the delta districts and nearby areas. By Thursday, similar conditions are forecast to continue, with moderate rainfall expected in parts of the delta region as well as southern Tamil Nadu.

The Nilgiris district may see thunderstorms in particular. However, many other areas across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are likely to remain mostly dry during the day.

Delta districts may see rain in the coming days

Weather activity may gradually shift to other regions over the next few days.

The weather centre has indicated that delta districts and nearby areas could receive moderate rain with thunder and lightning on March 18. Some isolated places in the rest of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry may also experience light rain during this period.

By March 19, rain may again appear in parts of the delta districts and southern Tamil Nadu, while other regions could see light scattered showers.

Temperature trend across Tamil Nadu

Even as rain is expected in some districts, temperatures across the state remain close to seasonal levels.

For March 16 and March 17, the maximum temperature in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal may remain around 2°C above normal in some places.

From March 18 to March 20, temperatures may gradually dip by up to 2°C in isolated areas, potentially falling 1–2°C below normal levels.

Minimum temperatures during this period are expected to stay largely stable with only slight variation.

Chennai weather today

For Chennai and nearby suburbs, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy for the next two days.

Daytime temperatures may reach around 33–34°C, while nighttime temperatures could remain near 24–25°C. The city may experience cloudy intervals, but widespread rainfall is not expected immediately.

No warning for fishermen

The weather department has also said that no major warnings have been issued for fishermen.

March 16 to 20: No warnings for the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, the Bay of Bengal, and the Arabian Sea.

This means fishermen operating in the coastal waters of Tamil Nadu, the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea do not face any specific weather alerts during this period.
