Multiple districts in Tamil Nadu have announced local holidays for schools on July 23, 24, and 28, 2025, in view of important regional festivals and commemorative events.

The closures apply to both government and private institutions and are aimed at facilitating public participation in cultural and religious observances.

Festival holidays in Ariyalur, Kanyakumari, and Chengalpattu

In Ariyalur, schools will be closed on Tuesday, July 23, in observance of the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival and the birth anniversary of Rajendra Chola I—a revered Chola emperor celebrated for his military and administrative achievements.

The day will see cultural events and religious ceremonies across the district. Additionally, holidays have been granted on July 24 and July 28 as local observances continue.

In Kanyakumari, all schools will remain closed on Wednesday, July 24, for Aadi Amavasai, a day of ancestral offerings and pilgrimage. The decision was made in light of expected crowd surges at major temples and holy sites in the region.

In Chengalpattu, schools will not operate on Monday, July 28, due to the Aadipura festival, another significant occasion in the Tamil month of Aadi.

Working day adjustments to balance school calendars

To offset the extended holiday period and avoid disruption to academic schedules, the Ariyalur district administration has declared Saturday, July 26, a full working day for both schools and government offices.

Similarly, in Chengalpattu, schools will remain open on Friday, August 9, to make up for the holiday on July 28.

While the Mogaram festival, which fell on a Sunday, did not result in an official day off, the upcoming breaks have been welcomed by schoolchildren, educators, and local residents as an opportunity to participate in cultural traditions without academic compromise.

District officials across Tamil Nadu continue to balance community celebrations with the need to maintain consistent academic progress through scheduled compensatory working days.
