Heavy Rain Forecast for Tamil Nadu from January 8; Fishermen Asked to Stay Alert
Chennai Weather News: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a weather alert warning of widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal over the coming days. The warning comes after a deep depression formed over the Bay of Bengal and the equatorial Indian Ocean, raising concerns of heavy to very heavy rain in several coastal and interior districts.

Deep Depression Over Bay of Bengal Triggers Weather Alert

According to the RMC, an atmospheric circulation over the central Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal led to the formation of a low-pressure area around 5.30 pm on January 5 over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the equatorial Indian Ocean.

By 5.30 am on January 6, the system intensified into a deep depression and continues to persist over the same region. The weather system is expected to move west-northwestwards on January 7 and further intensify into a low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal.

Rainfall Likely to Intensify from January 8

While January 7 may see light to moderate rain at isolated places over coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, rainfall activity is expected to intensify significantly from January 8. Interior Tamil Nadu is likely to remain largely dry on January 7, though light morning mist may occur in some districts.

From January 8, thunderstorms with light to moderate rain are likely at several places along the coast and at isolated locations over interior Tamil Nadu.

Heavy to Very Heavy Rain Warning for These Districts

The RMC has warned that one or two places in Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukkottai and Karaikal may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall.

In addition, isolated heavy rain is likely in Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Villupuram and Chengalpattu.

On January 10, thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rain are expected at many coastal locations and some interior areas. Very heavy rain may occur at isolated places in Cuddalore, Villupuram and Chengalpattu, while heavy rain is likely in Puducherry, Chennai, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Ranipet and Kancheepuram.

Rainfall to Gradually Reduce After January 10

Rainfall activity is expected to gradually decrease on January 11 and 12, although isolated heavy rain may still occur in parts of the north coastal and adjoining interior districts.

Chennai Weather Update and Wind Warning

Chennai is likely to experience partly cloudy skies on January 7, with a chance of light morning mist. Maximum temperatures are expected to hover around 29°C, while minimum temperatures may range between 23°C and 24°C.

The RMC has also warned of strong surface winds of 35–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, along the Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar, Comorin Sea and parts of the Bay of Bengal between January 7 and 10.

Fishermen Advised Not to Venture into the Sea

Given the rough sea conditions and strong winds, fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea during this period. Authorities have urged coastal communities to remain alert and follow official advisories closely.
