The upcoming edition will be the 11th in the history of the tournament and will return the global event to the Southern Hemisphere for a large co-hosted competition featuring 20 teams.
T20 World Cup 2028: Dates, venues and hosts
The ICC has scheduled the 2028 T20 World Cup between October 21 and November 19, 2028.Also read: ICC T20 World Cup 2026 Prize Money
Australia will host the tournament for the second time after staging the event in 2022. For New Zealand, the 2028 edition will mark the first time the country will host a men’s T20 World Cup.
The competition is expected to be played across some of the most well-known cricket venues in both countries. The final list of stadiums is still being finalised by Dame Therese Walsh, who has been appointed as the Tournament Chair.
T20 World Cup 2028 major venues
In Australia, matches are likely to take place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne, the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney, Adelaide Oval in Adelaide and Optus Stadium in Perth.New Zealand’s venues expected to host games include Eden Park in Auckland, Sky Stadium in Wellington and Hagley Oval in Christchurch.
The 20-team grid: Who has qualified?

After the completion of the Super 8 stage in the 2026 edition, 12 teams have already secured their places for the 2028 World Cup.
Australia and New Zealand qualify automatically as the host nations.
The teams that reached the Super 8 stage in 2026 have also secured spots. These include India, England, South Africa, Pakistan, West Indies, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.
Three additional teams qualified based on the ICC T20I rankings as of the March 9, 2026 cut-off date. Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Ireland earned their places through this route.
The road for the remaining teams
Eight places are still open for the 2028 tournament.These spots will be decided through a series of regional qualification tournaments that will begin in mid-2026. Teams from different regions will compete in sub-regional and regional competitions to reach the final stage of qualification.
Sub-regional qualifiers in areas such as the Americas and Europe are already part of the schedule. The Americas qualifiers are set to take place in the Cayman Islands.
This process will allow several associate nations an opportunity to reach the main event.
T20 World Cup tournament format remains unchanged
The overall structure of the tournament will remain the same as the 2026 edition.The 20 teams will be divided into four groups of five during the opening stage. The top teams from these groups will move into the Super 8 stage.
From there, the competition will progress to knockout semi-finals and eventually the final.
India will enter the 2028 edition as the defending champions after lifting the trophy in 2026. Meanwhile, New Zealand will aim to use home conditions to push for their first title after finishing runners-up in the 2026 tournament.
