At a time when India recently won the bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 in Ahmedabad, former Union Minister and sports administrator Suresh Kalmadi, who was chairman of 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, passed away today after a prolonged illness. He was 81. He breathed his last in Pune, where he had been undergoing treatment, bringing an end to a long public career that spanned politics, public service, and sports administration.

Suresh Kalmadi's early life, schooling and education

Born in 1944, Suresh Kalmadi grew up in Pune, Maharashtra. He completed his schooling at St. Vincent’s High School in Pune and later studied at Fergusson College, one of the city’s prominent institutions. Suresh Kalmadi Served Indian Air Force as a Pilot

Before entering politics, Kalmadi served in the Indian Air Force as a pilot from 1964 to 1972. Kalmadi joined the National Defence Academy in 1960. He was later commissioned into the Indian Air Force as a pilot and took part in the 1965 and 1971 wars with Pakistan. During his Air Force career, he received eight medals for his service. Between 1972 and 1974, he also served as an instructor with the Air Force Training Team at the NDA before retiring with the rank of squadron leader. He formally retired from active service in 1974.

Business ventures in Pune

After returning to Pune, where his father was a doctor and a respected member of the Kannada community, Kalmadi entered the business world. His first major acquisition was the Poona Coffee House in the Deccan Gymkhana area. In 1974, he secured a dealership for Hindustan Petroleum products. His biggest business breakthrough came in 1985, when he obtained a Maruti dealership under the banner of Sai Service Station Ltd.

Suresh Kalmadi's entry into politics and association with Sharad Pawar

Kalmadi’s political journey began in the late 1970s through his association with Sharad Pawar, who was then a leading Congress figure. He backed Pawar when he broke away from the Congress in 1978 to form the Congress (Socialist). Supported by Congress (S), Kalmadi entered the Rajya Sabha in 1982 as an independent member.

Return to Congress and rise in national politics

When Congress (Socialist) merged back with the Congress in 1986, Kalmadi returned to the party. This enabled him to retain his Rajya Sabha seat for two more terms in 1988 and 1994. He went on to serve as Union Minister of State for Railways in 1995, a position he held for about nine months.

Lok Sabha debut and political shifts

Kalmadi entered the Lok Sabha for the first time from Pune in 1996. However, he parted ways with the Congress ahead of the 1998 general elections after being denied a ticket and floated the Pune Vikas Aghadi, which received backing from the BJP. Although he lost the election, his close ties with senior BJP leader Pramod Mahajan helped him secure another Rajya Sabha term.

Kalmadi represented Pune as a Member of Parliament multiple times. During his political career, he served as Minister of State for Railways between 1995 and 1996 under a Congress-led government. He remained an influential organiser within the party at both the state and national levels for several years.

Suresh Kalmadi's role as sports administration

Alongside politics, Kalmadi became a prominent figure in Indian sports administration. He served as President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and was closely associated with India’s participation in major international sporting events. His position in sports bodies kept him in the national spotlight beyond electoral politics.

Suresh Kalmadi Commonweath Games Controversies

Kalmadi’s public image underwent a major shift following the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in Delhi, where he served as chairman of the organising committee. Allegations of irregularities in contracts and spending during the preparations for the Games placed him under intense national scrutiny. The controversy dominated headlines for months and became one of the most widely discussed episodes in Indian sports administration and politics at the time. Kalmadi was arrested in 2011 in connection with the case and was later suspended by the Congress party, marking a sharp break from his earlier political standing.

The move soon drew scrutiny. After the Union sports minister sought a probe into the decision, Kalmadi declined the honour. In a letter to then IOA president N Ramachandran, he said the timing was not appropriate for him to accept the post.

The legal proceedings related to the Commonwealth Games continued for several years, during which Kalmadi remained largely away from active electoral politics. In 2025, he received a clean chit in the case, bringing legal closure to a controversy that had followed him for more than a decade. The development marked a significant moment in his public life, coming years after the Games had reshaped both his career and public perception.

Despite the controversy, he continued to wield influence within sports organisations. In 2016, a panel of more than 150 members appointed him and Abhay Singh Chautala as life presidents of the IOA.

Suresh Kalmadi family life

Kalmadi is survived by his wife, a married son, daughter-in-law, two married daughters, a son-in-law, and grandchildren. Despite his national profile, he remained closely connected to Pune throughout his life.
