In an age of fleeting digital connections, a bungalow named Maitri in Surat’s Bhatar neighbourhood quietly bears witness to a rare and enduring bond—an 80-year-old friendship between two families that began before India’s independence and continues to thrive across four generations.

Maitri—which translates to ‘friendship’—is more than just a home. It is a living tribute to a bond first forged in 1940 between two schoolboys, Bipin Desai and Gunwant Desai.

Classmates at Sarvajanik School in Surat, they lived in the nearby Sagarampura area, walked to school together, shared meals, and spoke of their dreams—unaware that their companionship would someday define their family legacies.

When the Quit India Movement erupted in 1942, the two teenagers had just completed their matriculation. Answering Mahatma Gandhi’s call, they jumped headfirst into the freedom struggle. Together, they distributed anti-British pamphlets, organised protests, and even served jail time side by side.

Legacy beyond bloodlines

Their camaraderie only deepened in the years after India’s independence. Both Bipin and Gunwant pursued higher education at an agricultural university in Pune. Upon returning to Surat, they chose to remain not just friends but lifelong business partners.

They started with farming, then ran a dairy, moved on to contract work, and explored other entrepreneurial ventures.

What makes this story more remarkable is how the friendship has not only survived the test of time but has become a defining force for their descendants. Today, their children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren live together under the same roof at Maitri.

In a world where many families struggle to stay connected, Maitri remains a quiet testament to a friendship that started with schoolbooks and evolved into something akin to kinship.
