In a case of suicide pact formed by a lovelorn couple, the man chickened out at the last moment and the woman, who did jump but didn't die, has now filed an FIR over this bizarre 'betrayal'.

According to reports from Prayagraj, the couple had decided to jump into the Yamuna river to their death after society didn't accept their love affair. When the moment of fate came, the woman jumped but the man did not follow suit.

The woman, having jumped off alone, somehow managed to swim back to safety.

Why did the couple decide to jump off the New Naini Bridge?
The two were in love with each other but were married to different people. They wanted to spend the rest of their lives together, something that society didn't accept. Possibly inspired by some Bollywood movie, the couple decided to end their lives rather than stay apart.

The date, the place and the plan - everything was ready, but the plot twist came in the form of betrayal.

According to sources, the woman was in a relationship with Chandu for many years. A few months earlier, the woman had to go to Pune with her six-year-old daughter. In their absence, the man got married in secret to another woman. The woman returned home on the 18th of May and had a massive fight over this.

Chandu, however, promised and managed to convince the woman that he would marry her and divorce his wife. After many fights and ultimatums, the lovers decided to kill themselves.

On the 29th of May, the couple met on the New Naini Bridge to jump off and kill themselves. According to the woman, she was the first to jump, but Chandu did not follow her suit. The woman, a skilled swimmer, then managed to swim back safely.

Kydganj police subsequently reached the place of the incident and admitted the injured woman to a hospital.

The woman is a 32-year-old and a mother to a 6-year-old girl. Her lover Chandu is a 30-year-old. The FIR has been registered in the Jhunsi area. Santosh Singh, the Circle Officer, said the complaint against Chandu was for "attempting to murder and allegedly destroying the woman's mobile".
