Stained bathroom taps? Try these simple home cleaning tricks to remove hard-water marks and restore their shine

Bathroom taps can quickly lose their shine when exposed to hard water. White, cloudy or chalky marks around the faucet are often caused by mineral deposits left behind when water droplets dry on the surface. Regular wiping can help prevent buildup, but stubborn marks may need a little more attention.

If your bathroom taps look dull despite regular cleaning, a few simple household cleaning methods can help loosen these deposits and bring back their shine.

1. Try a white vinegar and water solution

White vinegar can help break down mineral deposits associated with hard water. For suitable chrome fixtures, mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a small bowl. Dip a soft cloth into the solution and wring out the excess. Wrap the damp cloth around the stained part of the tap and leave it for around 10 minutes. Then gently wipe the surface, rinse it with clean water and dry it with a microfiber cloth. For stubborn marks, the process may need to be repeated rather than scrubbed aggressively.

2. Use a soft toothbrush for tight spots

Hard-water buildup can collect around the base of the tap, edges, joints and other difficult-to-reach areas. A soft toothbrush can help clean these spots without requiring harsh scrubbing. Dip the toothbrush into the diluted vinegar solution and gently brush the affected areas. Once the deposits loosen, wipe the tap with a clean damp cloth and dry it thoroughly. Avoid using a hard-bristled brush or rough scrubber, as aggressive scrubbing can damage some finishes.

3. Wipe the tap dry after cleaning

Once the mineral deposits have been removed, drying the tap is an important part of keeping it clean. Water droplets left on the surface can dry and leave behind another layer of mineral deposits.

Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth to wipe the faucet after cleaning and whenever you notice water collecting around it. Keeping fixtures dry can help reduce the formation of fresh hard-water marks.

4. Repeat instead of scrubbing too hard

Old mineral deposits may not disappear after one cleaning. Rather than using excessive force, repeat the gentle cleaning process if necessary.

For particularly stubborn buildup, a commercial cleaner designed specifically for hard-water deposits may be an alternative. Always check the product label to make sure it is suitable for the tap's material and finish.

Things to keep in mind before cleaning bathroom taps

Not every tap finish should be treated in the same way. While diluted vinegar can be useful for some chrome fixtures, acidic cleaners may damage certain decorative or delicate finishes.

Before applying any homemade solution, check the manufacturer's care instructions or test it on a small, inconspicuous area. Never mix cleaning products, particularly bleach-based cleaners with other household cleaners, as this can create harmful fumes.

With regular wiping and careful cleaning, you can reduce the buildup of hard-water marks and keep bathroom taps looking cleaner and shinier for longer.
