RRR, directed by SS Rajamouli, was widely regarded as India's best bet for the Oscars this year. Many people assumed that the film would be India's official entry for the Academy Awards. In the end, it was defeated by the Gujarati film "Chhello Show" in a controversial decision.

Rajamouli responded, "Yeah, it is disappointing," when asked if it was frustrating or disappointing to learn the movie would not be India's official Oscar entry. But we are not the type to sit around and ponder why it didn't happen. What has happened has happened, and we must move on. But I am happy because it (Chhello Show) is also an Indian film that has been nominated for an Oscar. It makes me very happy. Everyone knew RRR stood a much better chance. Everyone in the US thought RRR had a better chance."

RRR is still in the Oscar race, having submitted nominations in all categories. However, Chhello Show is India's entry in the Best Foreign Film category.

RRR is a fictionalised account of two real-life revolutionaries starring Jr NTR and Ram Charan. The period action-drama grossed over Rs 1100 crore globally and was also a critical success. It rose to prominence in the West following its digital release on Netflix, where it quickly became a cult classic, earning praise from Hollywood heavyweights such as James Gunn and Danny DeVito.

In the months leading up to the big night, RRR won a number of accolades, including a Golden Globe for Best Original Song (for Naatu Naatu), a first for an Indian film.
