With speculation of an "internet apocalypse" on the horizon, NASA has been forced to offer clarification on the rumours.

Rumours have spread that the probability of solar storms reaching a 'maximum,' could increase the possibility of an "internet apocalypse."

A severe solar storm is unlikely to hit the Earth, but the consequences of one are significant, with global connectivity likely to see months of disruption.

Economic impact from a potential solar situation could rise to $11 billion per day in the United States alone.

Sangeetha Abdu Jyothi, a computer science professor at the University of California, has contributed to these concerns through her paper titled 'Solar Superstorms: Planning for an Internet Apocalypse.'

In a Washington Post interview, Jyothi clarified that extreme solar storm events have not been experienced before. As a result, the response of our infrastructure to such events remains unknown, as these scenarios are not typically accounted for in failure testing.

“We’ve never experienced one of the extreme case events, and we don’t know how our infrastructure would respond to it,” Jyothi told Washington Post. “Our failure testing doesn’t even include such scenarios.”

While the news quickly spread across social media platforms, it is essential to rely on credible sources of information. NASA, the space agency responsible for monitoring solar activities, has not issued any warnings regarding an impending "internet apocalypse." As discussions continue, it is important to approach the topic with caution and seek accurate information from reputable scientific authorities.
