Spain becomes first European nation to pass law permitting 'menstrual leave'

In Spain, women now have the option to take their monthly menstrual leave for three to five days if they feel uncomfortable during their periods. On Thursday, Spain passed a number of sexual and reproductive rights laws, including ones over abortion and transgender rights, making it the first nation in Europe to grant workers the right to paid menstruation leave.

Irene Montero, the nation's equality minister, stated in front of the legislature that without these rights, women are not full citizens. The menstrual leave provision will be funded by the government.

Out of 185 votes cast in the parliament, 154 were in favour of the measure that was approved in Spain. The majority has voted in favour of this measure, the government informed. The Spanish Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology estimates that roughly one-third of women endure extremely painful periods. Several organisations have also voiced opposition to the plan to grant women leave during their periods. The main labour organisation in Spain, the UGT (Unión General de Trabajadores), has criticised the measure. According to the group, this law can stigmatise women in the workplace.
