According to an FIR filed with the Kalol taluka police, the brothers, Sanjay Thakor, 27, and Jayesh Thakor, 23, had held a grudge against Ratanji, a mason, for over 15 years. The brothers believed that Ratanji’s affair with their mother dishonoured their late father’s memory and brought shame to their family, as reported by TOI.
The victim’s son, Ajay, who filed the FIR, alleged that the brothers had repeatedly warned Ratanji to stay away from their mother. "They have brawled with the victim a couple of times, too. The brothers even involved community elders in the matter, but their efforts to resolve the issue peacefully failed," said investigating officer Unnati Patel from Kalol taluka police.
On the day of the incident, which took place while Ratanji and his associate, Jikuji Parmar, were working on a construction site, the brothers allegedly decided to take matters into their own hands. Armed with a knife and a rod, they approached Ratanji. Jayesh struck Ratanji on the head with the rod, and as he collapsed, Sanjay stabbed him repeatedly. According to the FIR, “He drew out Ratanji’s intestines and flung it in the air. He sliced the latter’s internal organs as Ratanji collapsed in a pool of blood."
While some labourers and Ratanji's friend attempted to save him, the brothers brandished the knife and rod, which were soaked in blood, to keep the villagers away before fleeing on their motorcycle.
The police tracked the accused using their mobile phone locations and arrested them later the same day. Both brothers have been charged with murder and abetment.
