'All is not well in Ladakh': Inspiration of film '3 Idiots', Sonam Wangchuk urges PM Modi for climate mitigation
Sonam Wangchuk, the inspiration for the film 3 Idiots and the character played by Aamir Khan, in a video message has issued an appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sonam Wangchuk intends to begin a five-day "Climate Fast" on January 26 at 18000 feet at Khardung La pass, when the temperature is -40°C.

Wangchuk expresses concern about the possibility of corporate development in the union territory area, which is expected to exacerbate the already acute scarcity of resources like water. Glaciers may melt as a result of mining and other similar activities.

He is heard in the video saying that Ladakh, also known as the "third pole" of the planet, is dealing with major challenges as he references the 6th Schedule and associated demonstrations. Locals have been advocating for Ladakh to be included in the 6th Schedule in order to encourage overall economic growth and decision-making autonomy. The subject has already been raised in Parliament.

Wangchuk says that Arjun Munda, the Minister of Tribal Affairs, has also made guarantees.

The people of Ladakh are bewildered as to why the government is not giving attention to this demand, Wangchuk says in the 13-minute film.

Wangchuk previously claimed that in order to address concerns such as climate change, individuals must modify their habits rather than provide money to the world. In December, he used recent events in the northern mountainous area, such as flash floods, to highlight the consequences of climate change and said that people in big cities throughout the world are too responsible for these changes.
