Somvati Amavasya 2023: Date, time, significance

Monday, February 20 is the new moon of Phalguna month, signalling the conclusion of the month's Krishna Paksha. Somvati Amavasya is the name given to the new moon that occurs on Monday. After bathing in rivers for our ancestors, we do incense-meditation, shraddha, tarpan, and donation-virtue.

Phalguna Amavasya is a celebration glorifying our ancestors. On this day, individuals meditate on the sun for their deceased family members. It is thought that the shraddha karma performed on Avmasya contributes to the family's pleasure and serenity.

Here is how to pray for your ancestors:


On Monday morning, take a holy bath before beginning the day by giving arghya to the sun. Following that, worship at the home temple.
Begin preparing for sun-meditation for the ancestors about 12 p.m. People also light a lamp after burning the eggs formed from cow dung.
When the smoke from the tubers has stopped, present jaggery and ghee to the ancestors while meditating.
Take some water in your palm and present it to the ancestors with your thumb.
After meditating on the sun, one should undertake some charity activity, such as distributing food, grains, and money to those in need.

These auspicious works can also be performed on Amavasya:

On Monday, serve water infused with copper lotion and milk infused with silver lotion to the Shivling. Namah Shivaya: The Shivaya Mantra should be said. Give auspicious items such as bilva patra, dhatura, figurines of flowers, sandalwood, necklaces and flowers, and so on. This is followed by aarti, which is performed by igniting incense-lamps.

In astrology, the Moon is known as the Monday factor planet. They worship the statue of Chandra Dev, or the moon, who sits atop the Shivalinga’s head. When singing the mantra Om Somay Namah, Chandra Dev should be anointed with milk. Following that, people distribute and consume sweets.

Devotees recite the Hanuman Chalisa while lighting a lamp in front of Hanuman ji. You can repeat the mantra Om Ramdootaya Namah if you like.

Fill the southern conch with saffron milk and anoint Lord Vishnu, Mahalakshmi, and Shri Krishna.

On Amavasya, give as much as you can to the impoverished. Make flour tablets and feed the fish in a river pond on Amavasya as well.
