Top Health Screenings After 40: Preventive Tests You Shouldn’t Ignore
Turning 40 is often seen as a milestone, and health experts increasingly stress that it’s the perfect time to prioritise preventive care. Regular screenings and medical tests help identify potential health issues at an early, treatable stage, long before symptoms appear.

As per a report by TOI, Dr Sameer Bhati, Director at Anand Imaging & Diagnostics, explains: “The ageing process increases the likelihood of developing chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Regular health screenings allow people to detect issues early and adopt lifestyle changes that support long-term wellness.”

1. Blood Pressure Test

High blood pressure, often called the “silent killer,” usually has no symptoms. Regular monitoring can help detect hypertension early, reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure.

2. Lipid Profile (Cholesterol Test)

The lipid profile measures total cholesterol, LDL (bad cholesterol), HDL (good cholesterol), and triglycerides. According to TOI, periodic cholesterol testing, annually or as advised by your physician, can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease in people over 40.

3. Blood Sugar Test

Diabetes screening is essential after 40. Fasting blood sugar and HbA1c tests detect prediabetes or early-stage diabetes, offering an opportunity to manage blood sugar with diet, exercise, and medication if needed.

4. Complete Blood Count (CBC)

A CBC provides vital information about red and white blood cells and platelets. It helps identify anaemia, infections, inflammation, and certain blood disorders.

5. Thyroid Function Test (TSH)

Thyroid disorders become more common with age and can affect metabolism, energy, and weight. A TSH test screens for hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, allowing early intervention.

6. Liver and Kidney Function Tests (LFT + KFT)

These tests evaluate how efficiently your liver and kidneys are working. Early detection of fatty liver, kidney impairment, or metabolic disorders can prevent serious complications.

7. Abdominal Ultrasound & Eye Examination

An abdominal ultrasound checks the liver, kidneys, and gallbladder. Regular eye exams can identify vision changes, glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal disorders early.

8. Heart Evaluation (ECG + Echocardiography)

Tests such as ECG and echocardiography assess the heart’s electrical activity and structure. Advanced diagnostics, including coronary artery calcium scoring and CT angiography, detect early heart disease in those at higher cardiovascular risk.

9. Cancer & Bone Screening

Screenings like mammography, colonoscopy, and PSA tests allow early detection of cancers. The DEXA bone density scan helps identify osteoporosis, preventing future fractures.

10. Vitamin D and B12 Tests

Deficiencies in vitamin D and B12 are common and can cause fatigue, bone weakness, nerve issues, and lowered immunity. Blood tests identify deficiencies, which can then be corrected with diet and supplements.

Why Preventive Screening Matters

In the TOI report, Dr Bhati adds: “Health experts increasingly emphasise preventive care rather than waiting for symptoms. People over 40 face higher health risks due to lifestyle factors such as poor diet, low physical activity, stress, and sleep issues. Regular screenings help people understand their health and make informed choices.”

Medical tests are most effective when combined with healthy lifestyle habits, including balanced nutrition, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress management. Preventive care after 40 isn’t about fear, it’s about taking control of your health and maintaining vitality for years to come.
