Singapore’s NEWBrew beer made from recycled toilet water wins admirers
A beer from a brand of drinking water in Singapore is gaining admiration for recycling sewage water to make a blond ale. Though the idea was opposed earlier, it has gradually gained traction among people.

NEWBrew has emerged as one of the most popular beers in Singapore. This beverage came into existence after Brewerkz and PUB collaborated. Brewerkz is a local craft brewery, while PUB is the National Water Agency of Singapore.
The NEWBrew beer was first launched in 2018 at a water conference. The sale for the beer started in April in supermarkets and outlets of Brewerkz. A consumer named Chew Wei Lian said he couldn’t tell that they used toilet water for making this beer as it tasted just like beer, and he liked the taste.
The NEWater that goes into the making of NEWBrew beer is completely disinfected, and UV light is made to pass through the liquid to get rid of all the harmful microbes.
While water resources are depleting quickly and recycling is the need of the hour. And, one of the best ways to expand the technology is to convince the public that after processing this water, it is safe to drink. So, people are not hesitant to buy it.
The head brewer at Brewerkz says that they use NEWater as it is perfect for brewing because of its neutral taste. He adds that the water’s mineral profile plays a vital role in chemical reactions during brewing.
However, this isn’t the first time that recycled sewage has been used at breweries to make beer. Nya Carnegie Brewery, based in Stockholm, launched a pilsner made of purified sewage. Canada’s Village Brewery also released its version.
