Nepal is in the grip of unprecedented political turmoil as dramatic scenes unfold across the country. Massive protests have forced Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign, and reports suggest that he is planning to flee to Dubai. Meanwhile, several other ministers have reportedly been beaten, and in a shocking incident, former PM Jhala Nath Khanal's wife, Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, was burned alive.

Amid these disturbing events, a video is going viral on social media showing the family members of Nepalese ministers fleeing their homes while precariously clinging to the rope of a helicopter.

Visuals widely shared online depict ministers and their families being airlifted from rooftops and open fields using military helicopter rescue slings, as angry protesters watched from below. The images, which have gone viral, capture the extraordinary moment when public fury reached its peak, forcing the state to deploy the army to evacuate high-profile political figures. Soldiers have since been deployed across the capital, enforcing stay-at-home orders and patrolling key government sites to restore order.

All About the Nepal Protests

The unrest was triggered by the government’s decision to suspend social media platforms, citing non-compliance with new registration rules. This move sparked massive demonstrations in Kathmandu, which quickly escalated into violent confrontations between citizens and authorities.

The protests—dubbed the “Gen Z Uprising” due to the overwhelming participation of young demonstrators—have been particularly intense. Crowds targeted the residences of senior government officials, torching the home of Communication Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung and attacking the houses of Deputy Prime Minister Bishnu Paudel, Nepal Rastra Bank Governor Biswo Paudel, and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak. Video evidence showed the Finance Minister being chased and assaulted by protesters, while another clip revealed Foreign Affairs Minister Arzu Rana Deuba and her husband, former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, bloodied and waiting in a field for helicopter evacuation.

The chaos even spread to prisons, where inmates set fire to cells and attempted to escape before being stopped by military personnel and relocated. Analysts say the protests reflect deep-seated frustrations over corruption, nepotism, and lack of economic opportunities. With youth unemployment at around 20 percent, over 2,000 young Nepalis reportedly migrate abroad every day for work, leaving a generation disillusioned with the country’s political establishment.
