Shocking bungee jump horror in Rishikesh: rope snaps mid-air, tourist critically hurt

A bungee jump accident in Rishikesh, a hub for adventure tourism and thrill-seekers, has raised huge safety concerns after a thrill‑seeker’s bungee cord snapped mid‑air during a jump at an adventure park, leaving the tourist critically injured. The terrifying moment was captured on video and the footage went viral online, sparking widespread concern over safety at the site.

What Exactly Happened

The victim has been identified as a 24‑year-old man from Gurugram named Sonu Kumar, according to TOI. At around 4:37 pm, he jumped off the platform with the cord allegedly attached correctly. But halfway through his descent, the rope snapped. He plunged downwards and hit the roof of a nearby tin structure with great force.



Eyewitnesses say the fall left Sonu with serious injuries and that he was immediately rushed to AIIMS Rishikesh for treatment, according to reports. The accident happened on the 12th of November, 2025.

According to TOI, no ambulance or trained emergency personnel were available on site, questioning whether the operator had proper procedures to respond to such a disaster.

The accident has ignited a fierce debate about whether adventure sport providers in Rishikesh are maintaining adequate safety standards. Online users are expressing their anger over this incident. Some users demand that these rides costing around 6000 rupees per jump should have their sites properly maintained and the equipment’s quality routinely checked to maintain the safety of the tourists.

Safety experts are demanding more frequent audits of operators, mandatory checks on equipment, and better emergency protocols.

An inquiry has been launched and the Tehri Garhwal District Magistrate has also ordered a safety audit of the adventure operator. Meanwhile, the Muni Ki Reti police station confirms that they are investigating, though no FIR has yet been registered because no formal complaint has been filed by the victim’s family.
