Shocking: After 8 years of marriage, wife finds out her husband was earlier a woman

What could be termed as an incredible incident, a 40-year-old woman from Gujarat’s Vadodara shocked to find out that the person she married seven years ago in 2014, was earlier a woman and had undergone a sex-change operation.

According to a report by TOI, the woman Sheetal (name changed) accused Dr Viraj Vardhan (earlier Vijaita) of 'unnatural sex' and cheating in a first information report (FIR) filed in the Gotri police station, also naming his family members in the FIR.

It was a matrimonial website, which brought Sheetal and Viraj, a Delhi resident, together, nine years ago. Sheetal's ex-husband was killed in a car accident in 2011 and she had a 14 years old daughter at that time. Sheetal and Viraj tied the knot in 2014 and had gone to Kashmir for their honeymoon.


"They married formally in February 2014 in the family presence and even went on honeymoon to Kashmir," according to the police. "However, the man did not consummate the marriage and continued to make excuses for several days." When she pressured him, he claimed that an accident he had years ago in Russia rendered him incapable of having sex," an official explained in a statement. The accused had assured the wife that he would recover completely.

In January 2020, Viraj told Sheetal that he wanted to undergo surgery for obesity. However, later he said that he had undergone a gender reassignment surgery while he was away, without giving any details.

He allegedly began to have "unnatural sex" with the woman and threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed the truth to anyone, reported TOI.

The accused has been detained and brought to Vadodara from Delhi, according to the police.
