Like every year, the celebration of Shivrajyabhishek Sohala or Shivrajyabhishek Din is on June 6, 2022, across Maharashtra. On this particular day, Shivaji became the king of the Maratha Empire in 1674.

On this day in 1674, Chhatrapati Shivaji became the king of the Maratha Empire. Hence, the day calls for a massive celebration for the people of Maharashtra, who greet each other with special messages and wishes.
The anniversary day of Shivaji’s coronation is marked as he was crowned in Raigad and began to rule the famous Maratha empire. People also call the day Rajyabhishek Sohala.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born on February 19, 1630, to Shahaji and mother Jijabai in Shivneri Fort. As per the Hindu calendar, Shivaji’s Shivrajyabhishek took place on the 13th day of Jyeshtha month’s first fortnight in 1596. The Gregorian calendar indicates the day was June 6, 1674.
Chhatrapati Shivaji was named after the local Goddess Shivai. It is believed that his mother, Jijabai pleaded to the Goddess for a son as she had several sons before Shivaji who didn’t survive.
Chhatrapati Shivaji ruled over the Maratha Empire for a period of 6 years. Although Shivaji was known as a devoted Hindi empire, he appointed several Muslims in his administrative services. He was known as one of the bravest warriors who prided himself as the protector of his religion. Remarkably, Shivaji was one of those handfuls of rulers in Indian history who preached true religious intolerance.
Shivrajyabhishek Sohala holds immense significance in the history of Maharashtra as people celebrate the occasion with great enthusiasm and respect. Special celebrations are organised in Raigad as people gather there to celebrate the life, works and contributions of Shivaji Maharaj. Statues of Chhatrapati Shivaji across Maharashtra are decorated with flowers and garlands on this special occasion.
