Shiv Puja: Date, rituals, how to worship Mahadeva on the auspicious day of Som Pradosh

The month of Vaishakh is considered holy among Shaivites, as described in the Skanda and Shiva Puranas. Tomorrow, on April 17, the first Pradosh fast of the month will take place, coinciding with Monday which is known as Som Pradosh.

During the month of Vaishakh, it is a customary practice to place a pot or urn of water on the Shivling. This ritual symbolizes that just as every drop of water from the pot falls on the Shivling and flows away, our problems too will gradually diminish and disappear.

According to the Shiv Purana, worshiping the Shivling with water on Monday, which coincides with Trayodashi Tithi, can enhance our lifespan and rid us of all troubles.

During Pradosh and Shiv Chaturdashi in the month of Vaishakh, it is recommended to wake up early and take a bath before anointing Lord Shiva with water and milk. Following this, one can offer Madar, Dhatura, and Belpatra to the Shivling along with seasonal fruits.

Pradosh Vrat that occurs during the month of Vaishakh is highly significant. As per Narad ji, Vaishakh is regarded as the most superior month among all and is venerated by all the divine beings, as Lord Brahma had stated. Therefore, observing the Som Pradosh Vrat during this month is considered to be highly meritorious.

Fasting on Monday, coinciding with the Pradosh Tithi in Vaishakh, is believed to bring about marital bliss and alleviate physical problems. The Shiva Purana states that this fast is capable of fulfilling all one’s wishes and the person who observes it is said to attain Shiv Lok after death.
