‘Pakistan PM would have died’: Trump misspeaks, claims he prevented India-Pakistan nuclear war
US President Donald Trump in his latest State of the Union address, once again repeated his claim that he prevented a nuclear war between India and Pakistan. But this time, Trump made a stunning revelation saying that Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif had told him that almost 35 million people would have died had he not intervened in the conflict. In a dramatic twist, Trump said millions believed Pakistan’s Prime Minister would have died without his intervention. Many users interpreted the remarks which suggested that Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had effectively “begged” him to intervene.

The remarks of Trump quickly gained traction online, and social media quickly interpreted this as a direct claim that he saved Shehbaz Sharif's life. However, this is not what Trump explicitly said.

However, this was the first time that Trump claimed that Shehbaz Sharif told him 35 million people would have been killed during Operation Sindoor had he not stepped in. "In my first 10 months, I ended eight wars... Pakistan and India would have had a nuclear war. 35 million people, said the Prime Minister of Pakistan, would have died if it were not for my involvement," he said.

Donald Trump made these claims while highlighting his achievements during his first State of the Union address of his second term, saying he had ended eight wars in his first 10 months in the Oval Office. The US President has time and again repeated that Pakistani leaders credited him with saving millions of lives. India, however, rejects any suggestion of US mediation. New Delhi maintains the ceasefire was achieved through direct military talks after Operation Sindoor. India has repeatedly denied Trump’s claims of playing peacemaker between the two countries during the four-day war.

What did Trump say about Shehbaz Sharif?

“Pakistan PM would’ve died if it were not for my involvement,” Trump made the remarks during his State of the Union address, while referring to military tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations, India and Pakistan, in May 2025.

However, it remains unclear whether that was what he intended to say, as he continued to describe his role in preventing a wider conflict. Trump referred to what he described as praise from Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, claiming he had saved “35 million” lives and positioning himself as a key figure in easing military tensions.

“In my first 10 months, I ended eight wars… Pakistan and India would have had a nuclear war. 35 million people said the Prime Minister of Pakistan would have died if it were not for my involvement…” Trump said in his address. What Trump seamingly meant to say was that the Pakistan prime minister had claimed 35 million people would have died if it were not for Trump’s involvement.
