She asked ChatGPT for lucky lottery numbers. Minutes later, she won Rs 90 lakh

A 45-year-old woman from Wyandotte, Michigan, won Rs 88 lakh ($100,000) in the Powerball lottery after using artificial intelligence to choose her numbers. The winner, Tammy Carvey, relied on ChatGPT to generate random numbers for the $1.787 billion Powerball jackpot held in September, according to a press release from the Michigan Lottery.

How AI picked her lucky numbers

Carvey said she usually plays the Powerball only when the prize amount crosses a billion dollars. “I only play Powerball when the jackpot gets up there, and the jackpot was over $1 billion, so I bought a ticket,” Carvey said. “I asked ChatGPT for a set of Powerball numbers and those are the numbers I played on my ticket.”

Four of the numbers provided by ChatGPT matched the white Powerball numbers, earning her $50,000. Since she had also added the Power Play feature to her ticket, her winnings were doubled to $100,000.

From disbelief to surprise

“When I checked the winning numbers, I saw I matched four white balls and the Powerball and knew I had to have won something. Google told me it was a Rs 44 lakh ($50,000) prize, so that’s what I thought I’d won,” Carvey said. “It wasn’t until I logged into my Michigan Lottery account that I realised I added the Power Play to my ticket and actually won $100,000! My husband and I were in total disbelief.”

What she plans to do with the winnings

Carvey shared that she intends to use the prize money to pay off her home loan and save the remaining amount.

AI and lottery predictions are becoming a trend

This isn’t the first time AI tools have been used to select winning lottery numbers. In a similar case last month, Carrie Edwards from Virginia won Rs 1.32 crore ($150,000) after using ChatGPT to pick numbers for the Virginia Lotto. Edwards later donated her entire winnings to charity.
