The trailer of Shatak, a film chronicling 100 years of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has been officially released. Narrated by Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn, the trailer offers a sweeping glimpse into the organisation’s origins, evolution, ideology, and its role in shaping socio-cultural discourse in India.

Conceptualised by Anil D Agarwal, Shatak is directed by Aashish Mall and produced by Vir Kapur, with Aashish Tiwari serving as co-producer. Presented by Ada 360 Degree LLP, the film is slated for a theatrical release on February 20, 2026.

All About RSS

Founded on September 27, 1925, by Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, the RSS has grown from a small group of volunteers into what is widely regarded as the world’s largest socio-cultural organisation. The name “Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh” was formally adopted on April 17, 1926, after a vote among Hedgewar’s early followers.



Timeline: Key Milestones in RSS History

1926 – The first Nitya Shakha began at Mohitewada ground in Nagpur on May 28.

1927 – The first Officers’ Training Camp (O.T.C.) was conducted with 17 participants.

1928 – The first Pratignya (initiation ceremony) was held, with 99 swayamsevaks taking part.

1929 – Dr Hedgewar was named the first Sarsanghchalak.

1930 – Following the Congress’ Purna Swaraj resolution, RSS shakhas marked January 26 as Independence Day. Hedgewar and several swayamsevaks participated in the Jungle Satyagraha and were arrested.

1940 – The British government prohibited the Sangh uniform and route marches. Hedgewar passed away on June 21. Madhav Sadasiva Golwalkar became the second Sarsanghchalak.

1948 – The RSS was banned after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. The ban was lifted in July 1949, following the drafting of the Sangh’s constitution.

1952 – The Bharatiya Jana Sangh was formed by Syama Prasad Mookerjee, with several swayamsevaks joining the party.

1964 – The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) was established.

1975 – During the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi, the RSS was banned for a second time.

1980 – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was formed.

1992 – The RSS was banned following the demolition of the Babri mosque in Ayodhya. The ban was lifted in 1993 after a tribunal ruled it unjustified.

1998 – The BJP-led NDA government assumed power at the Centre under Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a former RSS pracharak.

2009 – Mohan Bhagwat was named Sarsanghchalak.

2016 – The RSS replaced its traditional khaki shorts with brown trousers, signalling a modernised uniform policy.

2021 – Dattatreya Hosabale was elected as Sarkaryavah.
