Gayatri Oberoi became widely known after playing Geeta opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Ashutosh Gowariker's 2004 film 'Swades'. She later stepped away from acting, but her life away from the screen has taken a very different direction.

The former actor and model has now moved into a massive new home in Mumbai's Juhu with her husband, real estate businessman Vikas Oberoi.

The residence, designed by Italian architect Piero Lissoni, covers around 75,000 sq ft and is spread across nine floors. It was envisioned by the couple over several years, with planning for the house beginning in 2015.

Rather than simply making the property larger, the design divides the home into areas for entertaining, family life, wellness and privacy.

A home with a rooftop view of the Arabian Sea

One of the most striking parts of the residence is its rooftop infinity pool, which looks out towards the Arabian Sea.

The sea-facing location has been incorporated into the architecture, allowing the view to become part of the experience of the house rather than simply an exterior backdrop.

The house has two entrances and two staircases. Lissoni designed one staircase for public areas and another for more private movement through the home.

The lower levels are largely dedicated to parking and wellness. They include a private gym and spa, giving the house its own space for fitness and relaxation.

The private theatre and spaces built for guests

The mansion also has a 12-seater private theatre.

Several floors are designed around entertaining, including large social areas and a grand salon. The scale of the home allows the family to host sizeable gatherings without turning the more private areas into public spaces.

Gayatri has previously recalled hosting a sit-down dinner for 65 people at the residence for the Epic Foundation in early 2025.

As the house rises, the design becomes more personal, with family lounges and quieter spaces intended for everyday life.

Vikas Oberoi wanted the house to work like a boutique hotel

The entertaining spaces were also shaped by Vikas Oberoi's approach to how the home should function.

He wanted the residence to have the efficiency of a luxury hospitality property, even though it remained a family home.

That thinking extended to the kitchen. The couple chose a Molteni kitchen, with Vikas specifically wanting a space where international chefs could be invited to cook during dinners and charity events.

The kitchen is therefore not hidden away from the main entertaining areas. Instead, it forms part of the social design of the home.

Italian design meets Indian art

Despite its enormous size, the mansion does not appear to have been designed around excessive ornamentation.

The interiors use wood, marble, neutral colours and textured natural materials, with occasional brighter elements. The couple also brought in artworks collected over several years.

Their collection includes works by Indian artists such as MF Husain, Ravinder Reddy and Manjit Bawa.

Rather than filling every wall, Gayatri and Vikas chose pieces gradually during their travels and through auctions.

This gives the home a more personal character, with the artwork connected to the couple's own collecting history rather than simply being used as decoration.

Who is Gayatri Oberoi?

Gayatri Joshi began her career as a video jockey and later participated in beauty pageants before appearing in music videos.

Her biggest acting role came in 2004 when she starred opposite Shah Rukh Khan in 'Swades', playing Geeta, an educated woman living in a village.

The film was directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and received widespread critical acclaim.

Gayatri subsequently stepped away from acting and married Vikas Oberoi, with whom she has since been involved in design and other aspects of their family's life.

Her new Juhu residence reflects that transition. It is less a celebrity showpiece and more a large family home built around entertaining, art, wellness and the sea-facing setting of one of Mumbai's most sought-after neighbourhoods.
