'Shaakuntalam' box office collection: Samantha-starrer movie earns less than Rs 10 crore worldwide

'Shaakuntalam' box office collection showed Samantha Ruth Prabhu's movie had a dismal performance. Despite being released globally and dubbed in Tamil and Hindi, the movie has reportedly earned less than Rs 10 crore in its opening weekend. According to reports, it is said to be the poorest opening for a film that was made with a budget of over Rs 50 crore.

Samantha portrays the role of Shakuntala, the lead character in the movie Shaakuntalam, who is the daughter of Menaka and Viswamithra. This film is the first collaboration between Samantha and director Gunasekhar.

According to trade analyst Trinath, Shaakuntalam has been a complete disaster at the box office and has recorded the lowest opening ever for a movie featuring Samantha in the lead role.


On Monday, the Telugu trade portal Andhra Box Office tweeted that Shaakuntalam has recorded the lowest opening for a movie that was made with a budget of over Rs 50 crore.



The tweet stated that it is the first time in the history of Telugu cinema that a big-budget movie, with the makers claiming it to be up to Rs 80 crore, could not gross double digits in its opening weekend. The tweet further added that it is a major box office disaster, and even non-theatricals, such as satellite rights may not be able to save the day.
