Selfies on the edge: Tourists swarm Karnataka's Harangi dam as waters rise, but safety is nowhere in sight; Official inaction flagged

The Harangi reservoir, now a popular tourist spot due to its full water level and floodwater release, faces safety concerns as visitors risk their lives by parking on the bridge and taking selfies near the dam's edge.

The Harangi reservoir has become a major attraction for tourists after reaching its maximum water level and releasing floodwater. However, visitors are putting their lives at risk by parking their vehicles on the bridge in front of the dam and taking selfies.

According to M.N. Chandramohan, Convenor of the Cauvery River Awareness Committee, many tourists are standing dangerously close to the edge, where there are no retaining walls. He added that dam security staff and local police seem to be ignoring the situation.

The dam is releasing water through four open crest gates, drawing more people to the site. But the rush of tourists has led to vehicles being parked in a disorganised manner on the narrow bridge, causing problems for moving traffic.

Chandramohan stressed the need for better safety measures and stricter action to prevent accidents. Visitors have been urged to act responsibly and avoid risky behaviour while enjoying the view.
