Seema Haider, the Pakistani woman who entered India illegally to marry a man she met online, today congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) 2019.

The contentious law paves the way for citizenship for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who came to India before December 31, 2014. The CAA was passed in December 2019 and subsequently received the president's assent, but there were protests in several parts of the country against it, with many opposition parties speaking out against the law, calling it "discriminatory." The law could not come into effect as rules had not been notified until now.

As per PTI, Seema Haider celebrated with her family in Uttar Pradesh's Noida after the Centre announced the implementation of the CAA.

"We are very happy; we congratulate the Indian government. PM Modi has done what he promised," she was quoted as saying.

Seema Haider captured the headlines in July when Indian authorities found her living with Indian national (now her husband) Sachin Meena in the Greater Noida area of Uttar Pradesh.

Seema's story went viral because she said she fell in love with Sachin on PUBG—a mobile game—and decided to go to him.

Her husband was working in Saudi Arabia when she ran away to India via the UAE and Nepal.

In an interview with the BBC, Seema said that she had adopted Hinduism and refused to return to Pakistan. Seema claims her children have also converted to Hinduism.

Haider had earlier written to President Droupadi Murmu seeking Indian citizenship amid calls for her deportation.

The Uttar Pradesh Police had reportedly earlier said that Seema will not be deported until its investigation is over.
