India has been seeing a surge in Covid cases over the last few days, with the country reporting 1300 infections over the past 24 hours on March 23.

According to health officials, the newly detected XBB 1.16 sub-variant could be driving the surge in India.

Anurag Agrawal, former head of INSACOG, believes "from what we have seen so far it won't be very different from previous Omicron lineages".

As per Anita Mathew, infectious disease specialist, Fortis Hospital Mulund, symptoms include cold, cough, fever, runny nose, muscle aches, and headache.

"Occasionally patients also develop vomiting and diarrhea," Mathew further told ET.

Mathew further said that the "previous hallmark" of losing taste and smell due to Covid infection is rarely seen now. This makes the symptoms more similar to flu.

Even though parts of India is seeing a surge in cases, the good news is that the new variant is not attacking the lungs.

Some of those coming to the hospital are people with multiple medical comorbidities, elderly patients, patients with heart disease or lung problems, said said Sandeep Budhiraja, group medical director, Max Healthcare.

Even though most people know it, doctors have urged citizens to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour.
